11 Type Of Laser Vision Correction Surgery

What Is LASIK? How Does It Works?

LASIK is also known as Laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. It is a laser procedure designed to use a laser underneath a corneal flap (in situ) to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis), so that it changes the focal point of the eye. Ideally, the focal point is changed so that it focuses perfectly on the retina, just like a normal eye.

Should I Choose Femtosecond Or Traditional LASIK? Cost Is The Biggest Factor In Why Surgeons Do Not Use

The cost of a IntraLaseĀ® Femtosecond system is about $500,000 and there is an annual maintenance fee of approximately $70,000, and a cost of disposable suction ring about $200 per eye. A microkeratome can be purchased for $35,000 or less, there are no annual maintenance fees and the cost of a blade is around $50 for both eyes.

The Ablation Depth Of Cornea For LASIK And The Amount Of Correction Needed

If the depth of the ablation leaves less than 0.250 mm of residual corneal tissue, the risk of the cornea shape ectasia, or blowing out is greatly increased. Most surgeons of LASIK choose a flap depth between 0.120 mm and 0.180 mm and leave 0.270 mm - 0.275 mm of residual cornea in order to provide a safety margin to allow for retreatment of LASIK.

Different Type Of Laser Eye Surgery Treatment For Astigmatism

Different brands of devices from different manufacturers may be able to correct astigmatism to various degrees. A wavefront LASIK machine may actually correct myopia up to 12.0 diopters with up to 6.0 diopters astigmatism, and the same machine may treat hyperopia up to 6.0 diopters with allocation of 5.0 diopters maximum for astigmatism.

The Cataract Surgery In The Future After LASIK

People who had LASIK also can have cataract surgery. However, about 10% of those patients will need a glasses following cataract surgery for the best visual result. Most often cataracts are an inevitable consequence of aging including those who have had LASIK and cannot be prevented. It is a natural clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye.
